Choosing a Bike for Kids’ Racing: Balance Bikes and Rippers Racing

Race Guides3 min readMalverns Classic 2027

Kids’ racing at the Malverns Classic is all about fun, confidence and a first taste of the race buzz. You don’t need an expensive bike, but the right one helps a lot.

Fit comes first

A bike that’s too big is harder to control and knocks confidence. Your child should be able to put both feet down comfortably when seated. Size by inside leg measurement, not age.

Lighter is better

A light bike is easier to steer, easier to push off on and easier to pick up after a tumble. It’s the single biggest upgrade for young racers.

Balance bikes

A simple, light balance bike with air tyres gives more grip than solid foam tyres. Set the saddle so your child can run and glide comfortably.

Pedal bikes for Rippers

Brakes small hands can actually pull, sensible gearing and tyres with some grip for grass and dirt. A single gear is fine for younger riders.

Safety kit

A well fitting helmet is essential, and gloves are a good idea. Check the race page for any required kit before the day.

Before race day

Pump the tyres up, check the brakes work and let your child practise on grass beforehand. When the courses aren’t being used for racing or practice, they’re open for everyone, so arriving early gives them time to get comfortable.
