What Bike Do You Need for Dual Slalom, 4X and Pump Track Racing?
Dual slalom, 4X and the pump track are some of the most exciting races to ride and watch at the Malverns Classic. They’re short and fast, and they reward a very different kind of bike from long trail rides.
Why small and stiff wins
These races are about acceleration, pumping and changing direction quickly. Long travel suspension absorbs the energy you create by pumping through rollers and berms. A hardtail or short travel bike turns that effort into speed.
Dirt jump bikes
Many racers use a dirt jump hardtail with a single gear, low saddle and strong frame. They’re tough, simple and perfect for jumps and berms.
Can I use my trail bike?
Yes. Lock out or firm up the suspension if you can, drop the saddle all the way down and run slightly higher tyre pressures for a faster, more responsive feel.
Gearing
A single, well chosen gear works well for short courses. If you’re on a geared bike, pick your gear before the gate drops so you’re not shifting at the start.
Practise the start
In head to head racing, the start often decides the result. Practise your gate starts and first few pedal strokes before race day.
Protection
A full face helmet is recommended for gravity racing. Check each race page for the required kit.
